*Washable Paper-Cloth* the Workshop

NEW  workshop, it's called: Washable Paper-Cloth

It is a Multi day Workshop

Let’s recycle paper and create art. This is an environmentally friendly class. First, we will learn how to make *washable* paper-cloth with recycled newspapers. This is my original technique to obtain a seamless integration of paper on cloth that you can iron, paint and sew by hand or by machine. We will also learn how to create our own fabric paint. It will be formulated for the exact color we want. This paint formula can then be used for matching future color projects . We will work with our own resist, do repeats and add colored backgrounds. Then we will learn how to prepare magazine clippings to easily applique by hand on to cloth. The last day we will design a small collage with the paper-cloths we made and sew accented details by hand.

This is the result of many, many years of experimentation and includes a lot of techniques, such as:

- create your own resist (economically)

- learn how to mix your own fabric paint and how to create your own color formulas which will be an invaluable reference for the future when you want to use the color you choose and not the color that chooses you! This new paint leaves a soft hand on the cloth, making it easier to sew by hand or machine.

- how to do repeats

- we will work with small pieces

- we will be sitting down for part of the processes making it easier to work...ehem play since this is a multi day class.

- we will design a small collage with some of our *new* paper-cloth fabrics.

I hope you can join me and share your time with me doing art!

*ZOOM* Meeting Artcloth with Paper and Fabric

*ZOOM* Meeting made with paper and fabric.
27 inches by 31 inches

My inspiration for this artcloth came from the directive to stay home and the need for internet communication. Each circle and square represent a person participating in a video call.

I started by creating a color palette and mixing the paint colors. On rare occasions I have used the original paint color that the manufacturer provides.

Then I chose old newspapers from the bin. In this case, the papers came from seven different countries.

After the newsprint was infused into the cloth (INC a washable paper and cloth) a new painting technique was applied which I called *Phantom Printing*. With this technique one never knows for certain where the images appear. It thus has a certain serendipity factor in it. The picture above has the first layer application.

This picture shows the second layer, the *surprise* layer where a second image appears, in this case the white lettering.

This art piece will always remind me of how precarious life is. Things can change in a blink of an eye. To cherish what we have, don't take anything for granted and try to live intensely.

Please stay safe.

QuiltNational 2109

At this year's Quilt National in Athens, Ohio, my quilt "Orange Blossoms" was awarded the *LYNN GOODWIN BORGMAN AWARD FOR SURFACE DESIGN*.

I am so honored to have received this award at such a prestigious international venue! This mixed media piece was made with the technique I developed called INC-Infused Newsprint Cloth, which is a washable cloth made with recycled  newspapers.

This is my first year submitting a quilt to QUILT NATIONAL and also my first time attending. It was so very emotional! I made new friends, who are all wonderful artists with their own styles.

I only took a few pictures of the event because I was very busy talking and getting to know the other artists.

Standing with Jane Broemel to the left and Elizabeth Ferry Pekins to the right.Jane's art is pictured in the back.

Selfie with Betty Busby, a great artist I have admired for many years, I was so happy to finally meet her in person.

Here I am with Arturo Sandoval, who also won an award this year for Innovative Material. He loves to use plastic and other unusual components for his work.

I had a lovely chat with Joan Schulze, a mixed media artist who also loves to work with paper.

Standing with Kathy Ford. Her quilt is behind us.

Some of us sitting at the lobby, signing lots of autographs. I felt famous for a couple of minutes.

After the festivities were finished I gave a WORKSHOP for two full days in the art room upstairs.

Ann Judy, Sandy, Kathy and one more student that had to leave a day earlier.

What a *wonderful* group of ladies. We worked very hard. They learned my technique of  INC. We covered all kind of ways to use this technique: working with masks, by design, shapes, repeats and more.

Here are a few pictures of the students work:

A BIG thank you for all the staff at the Dairy Barn Arts Center for organizing very well the events and helping setting up my classroom and assisting me on all of my needs.
I came back home with a smile in my heart!

*BLUE* Quilt Show in Tennessee

I am standing in front of my quilt. You can read more about the process here.

Last Friday was the opening reception for the Show called Stitched. Here in Memphis Tennessee! Can you imagine  seeing over 250 quilts ALL predominantly in  blue color in one room?

The requirements were to make a stitched three layer quilt with any material but a measurement of 24" by 24". Oh.. what a feast for the eyes.

These are some of the quilts from the Show; some have been made with paper and fabric!!  I apologize for not having the names for every artist but the labels were very small and the venue was crowded. Enjoy.

from my  friend Ronda. She did a Memphis landmark, clever idea!

from my friend Nancy

Here is my friend Vanessa posing with her quilt  (on top center). She overdyed the whole quilt after she finished sewing the three layers together, what a brave woman!

From my friend Patricia. She used paper and fabric.
From my friend Jeannie, the last quilt she made. I am sad she was not able to see it hanging in the show. We will miss you!
Bernice Johnson is the quilter standing in the middle. She made the quilt on the back with more than 1,000 2 square pieces. What a patience!

An *Artful* Apron

This is the finished apron.
Techniques: INC- Infused Newsprint Cloth -WASHABLE-  with masks, silkscreened words and ice dyed fabric.

First ,the fabric was colored with the *Ice Dyeing* technique. It is a fun technique with unexpected and beautiful results. Two colors of dye has been used: chocolate brown and butterscotch.

INC- Infused Newsprint Cloth was applied with circle and triangle shapes. I found this image on a French paper and couldn't resist to use it...maybe I put that face when I am developing a new technique?! or...when something is not working...HA

And these are close-ups. The words says: BE BOLD -Tell your story.

Washable Newsprint Cloth

Doing more samples for my  coming workshop at The Dairy Barn Art Center.

Interlocking paint designs with recycled newspaper is just  one of the techniques I will be teaching.

the end result is a soft cloth that can be used in a quilt or wearable art.
