Working on a *NEW* Paper and Fabric Quilt

 
I am working on a *new* paper and fabric quilt...
 
 
Part of the image has been infused with old newsprint, in this case I used *Japanese* papers my daughter brought from her trip, and part of the image has been painted.
 

Afterwards, bold simple stitches has been hand-embroidered before putting the three layers together. 
 
 
This is another example using the blue color. Before quilting.
 
 
After quilting.

 
More paint has been mixed to continue with this project. It is a slow process and I am enjoying every step.

*NEW* Workshops at AQS Fall 2018

I'd love to spark your creativity at one of my workshops at AQS- Fall 2018

I will bring a kit with most of the materials needed to work in class, you just come with basic sewing supplies and ready to have fun!

My first workshop is:
*Hand  Appliqué with Paper and Fabric* # 53513
 
I made *NEW* samples:
 
As my student you can choose to work on:
 
 

 
1) A printed block *silkscreened by me*….or:

 
2) To work on a non-colored block; and appliqué one of the art-deco flowers or leaves.

By combining magazine clippings with fabric you will create a unique fiber art.
  This is a great opportunity to learn how to stitch on paper, laminate and foil it.

*Hug Stitch: Embellish by Hand* # 56503.

*BLOOM* - The story behind it


*BLOOM* 37 inches by 37 1/2 inches... a whole cloth quilt

It all began when I read the news about a group of teachers getting together to help spark a labor movement leading for an increase in salary. With a background in teaching and early childhood education, I can’t help but sympathize with them since this is a problem that exists globally.
I started by cutting out newspaper articles about this topic. Then the newspaper pieces were infused into the cloth using my -INC- method. 

 Allow me to explain the steps involved:
Fig.1: I started by mixing the paint to match Aurifil LANA thread



Fig.2: For my color palette, I decided to eliminate the yellow-ochre and replace it by a lighter shade of gray
The color palette was chosen based on the thread I wanted to use and mixed the paint to match!


Fig.3: Next, seamlessly infused newsprint cloth -INC- was combined with painted areas to complete the flower designs



Figs.4 + 5: Then I applied the HUG stitch around the ovals and simple running stitches around the petals.


Fig. 6: Lastly, the three layers were sewn together by machine. Free motion quilting with the HandiQuilter Sweet Sixteen and the Glide Foot
  
 The letters   were  printed from a computer program and cut around to form a template. Then an erasable marker was used to draw the letters on the cloth before the machine stitching. 
Word BLOOM at the very bottom of the quilt, looks like trapunto but it is not.

STATEMENT:The upper small flowers represent the students. The ovals are the influences, guidance, and support we receive from the teachers who impact us in our early years. The big flowers represent the students who grow and begin to establish themselves as they prepare to take the next step in life. They bloom. (The word “bloom” is included towards the bottom of the quilt but only noticeable when the light hits or when you approach to have a closer look).



The start of a *New* Paper and Fabric Quilt

 After choosing a thread, I pulled out the fabric paints and started mixing them to match it's *exact* hue. It is interesting to discover how much underlining colors are in each mix. How much blue, yellow, gray and brown in different amounts are included in the mix to achieve the color palette I wanted.
 
 
Afterwards, the recycled newspapers came out.
 

Then, I applied an original technique which I developed and named *Infused Newsprint cloth* (INC) .
 My method allows for the SEAMLESS integration of aged print on various types of cloth. Which is also washable!
                                 
As shown on the figure, I am in the process of applying simple stitches around the shapes by hand.
