A Celebration of Earth on Cloth

Let’s celebrate EARTH DAY by using natural earth pigments on cloth

You can learn all about it in my latest article published in the Spring issue of the American magazine Quilting Arts/ Spring Issue.

It’s in there where I show you how to use earth pigments with stencils. It’s easy and very gratifying. On the above photo the eco printed image was applique over earth pigment painted cloth.

I couldn’t resist and chose to paint these bottles…. it is a celebration after all!!

A *RED* study quilt

Red is one of my favorite colors. It was a joy to work on this quilt.

It all started with two pieces of art cloth. The one you see above with washable paper-cloth made from recycled newspapers and 4 different color reds: salmon, orange, pink, dark red and light red. And a greenish, white and pale pink colored cloth.

Because I wanted more lettering in my design pieces of laminated magazine clippings were applique in some areas.

Embroidery stitches were applied all over the surface following the shapes originated by the dye. Different color red threads were used.

Only in one area white thread was used.

After all the textured embroidery stitching was done was time to sew the three layers together with the help of the sewing machine. I followed the square shapes and used 100 weight thread.

I love the texture created by the different weight of threads applied by hand and machine and the different texture created by the recycled newspaper, magazine clippings and paint.

My workshop it's called: *Gossip Blocks*

Let's have some fun with paper and cloth!

This is an environmentally friendly class. We will be experimenting with a layering technique of paper and cloth to create a unique mixed media quilt block. Learn how to prepare the paper for applique. Design, cut and paste them onto to cloth to form your gossip block. Apply accent stitches by hand. 

This is an ideal workshop for individuals who wants to explore something playful and different.

Do you want to try something different? Do you want to play outside the box?

With just a few materials you can easily add a POP of color to your quilt blocks. This is an ideal way to use up leftover fabric from other projects and create an entire new quilt. The design possibilities are endless. It’s a perfect technique for working in small spaces.

We will paint a detail on a white piece of cloth and combine it with a colorful fabric to create our block. Basic instructions will be given and each student can create their own design. Lots of fun!

One of the materials required for class is a a small set of paints. It costs $8.50 and if you call the store 800-228-9393 they will not charge you shipping and you pick it at their booth at Festival. Ask for MKINKKIT or tell them is for my class; they will know :)
